Expensive phone vs cheap phone?

My old phone is dying, like battery-barely-lasts-an-hour dying. I'm debating whether to splurge on the newest iPhone or Samsung, or just grab a cheap Android phone to tide me over for a year or two. I mostly use my phone for calls, texts, social media, and taking pictures of my dog. Is the camera on a flagship really that much better for casual use? I don't do any serious photography. Or is paying 200-300 bucks instead of 1000+ a better call and save the cash for a new laptop?

Consider diminishing returns; flagship phones offer marginal improvements for a significant price increase. If your primary uses are social media, casual photography, and video streaming, a mid-range Android device will likely suffice. Focus on battery capacity and camera specs relevant to your needs (e.g., low-light performance for cat photos). Read reviews comparing mid-range cameras to flagship models; the difference may not justify the cost for your usage.

If your primary use is social media and dog pics, the marginal benefit of a flagship camera diminishes rapidly. A mid-range phone with a decent camera (Pixel a series, some Motorolas) will likely suffice. The big gains in flagships are for low-light performance, zoom capabilities, and advanced video features that the average user won't fully exploit. Plus, cheaper phones are getting better every year. Unless you have a specific need for cutting-edge camera tech, save your money and put it towards that laptop.
