IPhone vs Samsung for long-term value?

I plan to keep my next phone for at least 5 years, maybe even longer if possible. I'm stuck between getting the newest iPhone and the newest Samsung Galaxy. Historically, which brand holds its value better in terms of software updates, battery life (or replacement cost), and general resale value down the road? I'm not too concerned about initial price; I'm looking at total cost of ownership over the long haul.

iPhones generally hold their value better than Samsung phones due to brand perception and demand in the used market. Apple also tends to provide longer software update support, often 6-7 years, while Samsung is typically 4-5 years of major updates, and then security patches. Battery replacement is comparable, both offering official services and third-party options, although Apple's battery replacements are often perceived as more reliable. Consider the cost of battery replacement in your budget when evaluating the total cost of ownership.

Apple generally provides longer software support for iPhones compared to Samsung. You can typically expect 5-6 years of iOS updates on iPhones, whereas Samsung usually offers around 4-5 years of Android updates and security patches on their flagship devices. While Samsung has made improvements in software optimization, some users still report experiencing slowdowns over time. iPhones tend to hold their resale value better than Samsung phones, especially after several years.

Apple provides longer software support, generally 6-7 years of major iOS updates versus Samsung's 4-5 years of Android updates. Batteries degrade similarly, but Apple Store battery replacements are often more streamlined. Resale value strongly favors iPhones; they consistently command higher prices on the used market even after several years.
