Google Pixel 8 vs Samsung Galaxy S24, which is better?

I'm stuck choosing between the Google Pixel 8 and the Samsung Galaxy S24 because I value camera quality above all else, but also need a phone that will last at least 4 years with software updates. Battery life is also a big concern since I'm often away from a charger all day. I'm not a huge gamer, so performance is secondary to camera, longevity, and battery. Which one should I get?

The Pixel 8 typically has better image processing, especially for stills, while the S24 might edge it out in video. Google's software update policy is usually more consistent and prompt. Samsung has improved, but Pixel still leads. Resale value is often better for iPhones, but between these two, it's a toss-up and depends on the condition and market trends at the time of sale.

For your priorities, the Pixel 8 edges out the S24 due to Google's superior image processing, especially in challenging lighting conditions. Google also tends to have faster updates. While Samsung promises longer support now, Google's track record is more established. Samsung's battery life is generally good, but the Pixel 8's adaptive battery features and slightly smaller screen might give it a slight edge for your use case. The S24's screen is brighter though, so consider that if you are often in direct sunlight.

If camera is truly your top priority, the Pixel 8 still holds a slight edge, particularly in tricky lighting conditions and with its processing of skin tones. Samsung has improved, but Google's computational photography is generally more consistent. However, consider the S24 if you prefer more saturated, vibrant images straight out of the camera; the Pixel aims for realism, which some find less appealing. Also, look at video recording; Samsung often pulls ahead there with more resolution options and manual controls.
