Is software engineering worth it in USA?

I'm weighing the pros and cons of switching careers, and software engineering keeps popping up. I'm in my early 30s and willing to put in the work to learn the skills, but is the job market as saturated as some people say? I'm especially concerned about ageism and competing with recent grads willing to work for less. Cost of living varies wildly across the US, so I'm trying to figure out if the salary potential justifies the effort, especially considering potential relocation costs and the time investment in learning new skills.

The market is definitely more competitive now, but solid software engineering skills are still in demand. Location significantly impacts salary; you'll generally earn more on the coasts (especially the Bay Area or NYC) but cost of living is also much higher. The Midwest offers a decent balance, but your earning potential will likely be lower compared to the coasts. Consider specializing in a high-demand area like cloud computing or cybersecurity to increase your value.

The software engineering job market is definitely competitive, but 'saturated' isn't quite accurate. Demand is still high, especially for experienced engineers with in-demand skills like cloud computing (AWS, Azure, GCP), cybersecurity, and data science. Ageism is a valid concern, but demonstrating continuous learning and a willingness to adapt to new technologies can mitigate this. Focus on building a strong portfolio, networking, and targeting companies that value experience. Salary potential is excellent, particularly in tech hubs like Silicon Valley, Seattle, and New York City, but factor in the high cost of living. Consider remote opportunities with companies based in these areas to potentially maximize earnings while living in a more affordable location. Certifications can definitely boost your resume, particularly entry-level ones to show commitment to the field.
AvatarTechGuru14: Agreed, 'saturated' is an overstatement; companies are struggling to find qualified candidates with the right cloud and data skills. Experience trumps all, so showcase projects and contributions.
