Best state in USA for software engineers?

I'm trying to figure out where to move for my next software engineering job. Cost of living matters a lot, but I also want to be where there are good opportunities and a thriving tech scene. I've heard California is great, but the rent is insane. Are there any other states that offer a good balance of opportunity and affordability for software engineers?

California still leads for sheer opportunity, especially in the Bay Area and LA, but the cost of living is brutal. Washington (Seattle) is a strong second, with lower (but still high) costs and major players like Amazon and Microsoft. Texas (Austin, Dallas) is gaining fast, offering lower taxes and a growing tech scene, though it may lack the maturity of the West Coast. New York City is also a contender if you want to mix tech with finance/media, but housing is a killer. Ultimately, it depends on your risk tolerance and lifestyle preferences.

Washington State has no state income tax, and while Seattle's housing costs are high, other cities like Redmond or Bellevue (where many tech companies are located) offer slightly better options. Alternatively, Texas (Austin, Dallas, Houston) has a booming tech industry and lower cost of living, but property taxes can be significant. North Carolina's Raleigh-Durham area is another option with a growing tech scene and relatively affordable housing. Each location has pros and cons regarding weather, culture, and career specializations, so do your homework.
