BMW vs Audi? Which one to choose?

I'm stuck between a BMW 3 Series and an Audi A4. I care most about reliability, maintenance costs, and which one is more fun to drive daily. I'm not tracking either car, just commuting and weekend trips.

BMWs generally have higher maintenance costs, especially as they age. Audis can also be expensive, but the 3 Series might nickel and dime you more. The BMW will likely be more fun to drive; it has sharper handling. For reliability, it's almost a toss-up, but diligent maintenance is key for both.

Audi tends to have slightly lower maintenance costs over the long run, but BMW offers a more engaging driving experience. Consider the specific engine; some BMW engines (like the B48) are known for better reliability than others. For your budget, a well-maintained, lower-mileage Audi A4 2.0T might be the safer bet for reliability and comfort. Test drive both and get a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic familiar with European cars.

Audi A4s generally have slightly better predicted reliability ratings compared to BMW 3 Series models from the same year. The A4's Quattro all-wheel drive provides superior traction in inclement weather, important if you live in an area with frequent rain or snow. BMW's steering feel is typically more direct and engaging, which some drivers prefer. Test drive both on your typical commute to assess comfort and handling.
