Which is better Carmax or Carvana?

I'm trying to stay under $20,000 and need something reliable for a daily commute of about 50 miles. Safety is a big concern, so I want something with good crash test ratings. Which offers a better selection and overall experience considering these factors?

Carvana's prices tend to be less negotiable than Carmax's. Carmax offers a no-haggle pricing model, but you can sometimes find discounts or negotiate on fees. Carvana's prices are usually fixed. For vehicle condition, both offer inspection reports, but independent inspections are always best if possible. If you can't do that, scrutinize the reports carefully and consider a post-purchase inspection within the return window.

Carvana's online-only model means you can shop anytime and often see a wider selection. However, CarMax lets you test drive before you buy and offers in-person support if you run into any problems. If a physical inspection is important to you, and it should be, CarMax wins.
