What salary is needed to live in San Francisco?

I'm trying to figure out a realistic salary for a single person living alone in San Francisco, not scrimping but also not living extravagantly. Assume a decent but not luxury apartment in a safe-ish neighborhood, cooking most meals, occasional nights out, and some travel. I'm also trying to factor in saving a reasonable amount each month. What should I be targeting?

You'll likely need a minimum of $120,000 to $150,000 annually to live comfortably in San Francisco as a single software engineer with 5 years of experience. This allows for reasonable rent (around $3000-$4000 for a decent one-bedroom), food, transportation, utilities, and some entertainment without excessive financial stress. Cheaper options exist, but require compromises on location or lifestyle.

Expect to need at least $120,000 to live comfortably as described. Rent will likely be your biggest expense, easily $3000+ for a one-bedroom in a reasonable area. After taxes, you'll need a good cushion for groceries, transportation, utilities, and those occasional nights out. Don't forget healthcare costs and saving for retirement.
