Steam Deck vs ASUS ROG Ally?

I'm torn. I want a portable gaming device, but I'm not sure which one to pick. I already have a pretty beefy gaming PC, so I'm not looking for a replacement. More like something I can take on trips or play on the couch when the TV is occupied. Battery life is a concern, and I'm not thrilled about having to tweak settings constantly to get games running well. Price is also a factor; I'd rather not spend a fortune.

The ROG Ally generally offers better peak performance due to its more powerful processor, especially when plugged in. However, the Steam Deck has better software optimization and a more seamless experience with Steam games out of the box. For non-Steam games, the Ally might require more tinkering. Mod support is similar on both, as they both run PC operating systems, but the Deck's community might have more readily available guides for specific games.

The Steam Deck's biggest advantage is its mature software ecosystem, while the ROG Ally wins on raw performance. If you value plug-and-play compatibility and a more streamlined experience, the Steam Deck is the better choice, even with its lower specs. The Ally, while technically more powerful, can be finicky and requires more manual configuration to get the most out of it. Consider the type of games you'll be playing. Indie games and older titles run great on the Steam Deck. AAA games will perform better on the Ally, but may require tinkering.

The ROG Ally wins on raw performance and screen, which is great for newer games or if you value visual fidelity. The Steam Deck's strengths are its software integration with Steam, which is generally smoother, and its lower price point. If you're primarily playing Steam games and want a hassle-free experience, the Deck is better. If you want to tinker and potentially play a wider range of games (including PC Game Pass), the Ally's the way to go. Ally's battery life is noticeably worse, though.
