The actual take-home pay is way more nuanced than just comparing salaries. California often has higher nominal salaries, but the state income tax is brutal, especially if you're in a higher bracket. Housing costs, particularly in the Bay Area or Southern California, can eat up a huge chunk of your income. New York City is also expensive, obviously, but outside of Manhattan, you can find more relatively affordable options in the outer boroughs or even upstate. Run a few different scenarios through an online cost of living calculator (there are many free ones) and factor in state and local taxes using an actual paycheck calculator. Then compare the disposable income. That's the only way to truly know.

Cost of living in California, especially the Bay Area, is generally higher than in most parts of New York (excluding Manhattan). While salaries might be comparable on paper, your disposable income could be significantly different. Consider factors beyond just the base salary: equity, bonuses, healthcare, and 401k matching. A lower base salary with better benefits might be more advantageous depending on your circumstances. Also, state income tax in California is generally higher than in New York, which eats into your take home pay.
