Is California worth the salary?

I'm weighing a job offer in San Francisco against one in Austin. The California role pays 40% more, but after factoring in the cost of living (rent, gas, groceries), I'm not sure if I'll actually have more disposable income. Is that California sunshine really worth the financial squeeze, or am I better off building wealth more slowly in a cheaper locale?

Crunch the numbers using a cost of living calculator (there are several free ones online). Factor in state income tax, sales tax, and property tax if you plan to buy. Also, San Francisco has significantly higher rents, potentially eating up most of that extra $40k. Don't forget transportation costs; owning a car in SF is expensive due to parking and insurance.

The Bay Area's higher salary often doesn't translate to a better quality of life when accounting for expenses. Factor in state income tax as well; California's is significantly higher. Austin's real estate market is heating up, but it's still more affordable, and Texas has no state income tax. Crunch the numbers precisely with a cost of living calculator, but generally, a 40% raise might only break even.
