Is California worth living in?
My main concerns are the high cost of living, especially housing. I'm a software engineer with a decent salary, but even then, affording a home seems impossible in many desirable areas. The traffic is also a huge deterrent. I value outdoor activities and proximity to nature, but I'm not sure if that outweighs the downsides. Is it truly worth the premium, or are there other states that offer a better quality of life for a similar or lower price point?

A $150k salary in SF necessitates careful budgeting. Expect a large chunk for rent, possibly requiring roommates or living outside the city center. State income tax is significant. Factor in transportation costs (public transit or car expenses), groceries, and entertainment, which are all higher than average. Career opportunities are definitely there, but run a detailed cost-benefit analysis before accepting.

However, states like Washington, Oregon, Colorado, or even North Carolina offer strong tech sectors with lower living costs and access to nature. Research specific cities within California and compare their costs to similar cities in those states. Don't just look at average prices; factor in commute times, property taxes, and other lifestyle expenses.
