Is Austin worth moving to?

My job is letting me relocate anywhere in the US, and Austin keeps popping up on "best places to live" lists. But those lists never seem to consider the cost of living versus the actual quality of life. I'm in tech, so finding a job isn't really a concern, but I'm more interested in outdoor activities, good food, and a generally progressive vibe. Is the hype real, or is it just expensive now?

That budget might be tight depending on your definition of "decent" and tolerance for commute time. You'll likely be looking at apartments rather than houses in desirable neighborhoods close to downtown. Competition has cooled somewhat from the peak, but popular spots still move quickly. Be prepared to apply fast and have all your documents ready.

The hype is real, but it comes with caveats. Housing costs have skyrocketed, pushing many people further out from the city center, which impacts commute times and access to some of the cultural amenities. However, the job market in tech is indeed robust, and salaries often compensate for the higher cost of living. The outdoor scene is fantastic with numerous parks, greenbelts, and nearby lakes. Food options are incredibly diverse and high quality. While Austin is generally considered progressive, there are pockets that lean conservative, especially as you move into the surrounding areas. Weigh the increased cost of living against the specific lifestyle aspects you value most.
