Is Austin better than Seattle?

Cost of living is my main concern, but job opportunities in tech are also important. I'm a software engineer with about 5 years of experience. Which city offers a better balance, assuming I'm looking to buy a house eventually?

Austin's housing market is hot, but property taxes are a killer. Seattle has no state income tax, which can offset the higher housing costs somewhat. Job-wise, both are strong tech hubs, but Austin has more of the 'big tech' companies moving in. It really depends on your risk tolerance and how much you value owning a home sooner versus later. Factor in commute times too; Seattle traffic can be brutal.

Austin has a significantly lower cost of living, especially when it comes to housing. You'll likely find your dollar stretches further there. The outdoor scene is different; think swimming holes and hot weather hiking versus the Pacific Northwest's forests. Politically, Austin is a blue dot in a red state, which might be a consideration if you're looking for a very progressive environment.
