Is $90k enough in Tampa?

My wife and I are considering a job offer in Tampa, but I'm unsure if $90k is a comfortable salary there. We have a toddler and would prefer to live in a safe neighborhood with good schools, even if it means a slightly longer commute. We're not extravagant spenders, but we'd like to be able to afford family activities and save a bit each month. Is homeownership realistic on that income, or should we plan to rent? What areas should we target with that budget?

That salary is doable but requires careful budgeting. Rent for a house with a yard in a walkable area is probably going to eat up a significant portion of your income. Consider areas slightly further out from the most popular walkable neighborhoods to save on rent. Also, Tampa's property taxes are high, even if you're renting you will feel it through higher rents, so bear that in mind for future planning. Pet care for two dogs can also be a surprisingly large expense, so factor that in, too.

Ninety thousand gives you options but requires smart choices. Renting is definitely doable, especially if you prioritize location near good schools. Homeownership is possible, but look further out from the city center or consider townhouses. Areas like FishHawk Ranch or Valrico offer good schools and more affordable housing, but the commute to downtown Tampa can be significant. Factor in childcare costs, which can be substantial. Crunch the numbers carefully, considering property taxes, insurance, and potential HOA fees if you buy.
