Is $85k enough in Raleigh?

I'm considering a job offer in Raleigh, but cost of living calculators are all over the place. My main concern is being able to afford a comfortable 2-bedroom apartment in a safe area (not necessarily downtown), have enough for groceries and utilities, and still put some money into savings each month. I don't have any debt, and I'm not a big spender, but I also don't want to live like a pauper. Is $85k pre-tax a realistic salary to achieve that?

You can definitely make it work, but 'comfortable' is subjective. Your rent will likely be your biggest expense; expect to pay $1800-$2500 for a modern 2-bedroom in a desirable area. After taxes and your car payment, you'll have roughly $4500-$5000 per month. Dining out and other entertainment expenses will need to be budgeted carefully. If you want to save aggressively or have significant travel plans, it might feel tight. Negotiating for $95k-$100k would provide more breathing room and allow for more savings.

That salary is definitely doable for a comfortable life in Raleigh, especially if you're looking outside the immediate downtown area. You can find decent 2-bedroom apartments in areas like North Raleigh, Cary, or Apex for around $1600-$2200 a month. That leaves you with a good chunk of change for other expenses and savings, even after taxes. Just be mindful of your spending habits and you'll be fine.
