Is $80k enough in Austin?

I'm relocating for a job and the offer is $80,000 annually. I'm single, no kids, and pretty minimalist. I like being near things to do, so I'm thinking downtown or South Congress, but I'm also seeing some cheaper options further out. I don't want to live paycheck to paycheck, but I'm also not trying to save aggressively right now. Is $80k enough to live comfortably and still enjoy Austin's social scene, or am I going to be stressed about money all the time?

That salary in Austin is tighter than it used to be, especially with a pet and those debts. A decent 2-bedroom could easily run you $2000-$2500 a month now. Factor in utilities, groceries (especially with inflation), and those recurring debts, and you're not left with much for savings or unexpected expenses. Negotiating a bit more upfront would definitely ease the stress.

That salary in Austin can work, but "comfortably" is subjective. Downtown/SoCo are pricey; consider East Austin or even slightly further out like Mueller for better rent. Budget at least $2000/month for rent/utilities. Factor in food (eating out is expensive), transportation (car vs. public transit/rideshares), and entertainment. Track your spending for a month to get a realistic picture. $80k isn't lavish there, but it's doable with smart choices.
