Is $75k enough in Houston?

I'm moving to Houston for a job and the offer is $75,000 annually. I will be working downtown, and I'm trying to figure out if that salary will allow me to live comfortably, or if I should negotiate for more. I don't need a luxury apartment, but I'd prefer a safe area with decent amenities and a reasonable commute (under 30 mins). I have no debt and I'm single. How far will that salary stretch?

75k in Houston, without debt, puts you in a decent position. You can definitely find a safe apartment in areas like Midtown, Montrose, or the Heights while staying within a reasonable budget. Aim for rent around $1500-$1800. Transportation costs should be manageable, especially if you utilize public transport or live close enough to bike. Dining out and entertainment are relatively affordable, so you should still have money left over for savings and other expenses.

Seventy-five thousand in Houston can be sufficient, but it's highly dependent on your definition of 'decent' and 'safe'. Rent downtown or in upscale areas like the Heights will eat a significant chunk of your income. Consider areas slightly further out like Midtown, Montrose, or even some parts of the Energy Corridor for more affordable options. Use online cost of living calculators, but be realistic about your spending habits. Factor in transportation costs (car vs. public transit), groceries (eating out vs. cooking), and entertainment. Also, remember Texas has no state income tax, which helps. Run a detailed budget.
