Is $70k enough in Chicago?

I'm moving to Chicago for a job downtown, and the offer is $70,000 annually. I don't have kids and am fine with a small apartment, maybe a studio or a one-bedroom in a decent, safe neighborhood that's not too far from public transportation. I'm not a big spender, mostly just need to cover rent, utilities, groceries, and the occasional night out. Is it doable or am I setting myself up for stress?

70k in Chicago requires a budget. Look to neighborhoods like Rogers Park or Edgewater for more affordable rent while still having transit access. Budget around $1500-$1800 for rent max. Cooking at home is key. Entertainment will need to be carefully considered. Savings will be tight, but possible. Consider a roommate if you want more breathing room.

You can absolutely make $70k work in Chicago, especially without dependents. Look at neighborhoods like Uptown, Edgewater, or Rogers Park for more affordable rent options along the Red Line. Public transportation is very reliable. Cooking at home more often than eating out will stretch your budget considerably. Track your expenses for the first few months to fine-tune your spending habits. Consider a roommate to split costs further if needed. You might not live lavishly, but a comfortable life is realistic.
