Is $120k enough in Seattle?

My partner and I are considering a move to Seattle, and I'm trying to get a realistic sense of affordability. We have a combined income of $120,000 before taxes. We don't have kids, but we do have a dog. I'm wondering if we can comfortably afford rent, utilities, groceries, and still have some money left over for occasional dining out and entertainment. Is owning a car a must, or is public transit a viable option? What neighborhoods should we be targeting, assuming we want a relatively safe area with decent access to amenities?

That salary in Seattle is workable, but 'comfortable' depends on your definition and spending habits. After taxes, you're probably looking at around $7,000 per month. Rent in Ballard or Fremont for a one-bedroom can easily run $2,200-$2,800. A car payment, insurance, and gas could add another $600-$800. Food (groceries and eating out) might be $800-$1200. That leaves you with $2,200-$3,400 for savings, utilities, entertainment, and other expenses. Track your spending closely for a month or two to see if it aligns with your expectations.

That income is tight but doable if you're smart about location. Look into neighborhoods like Ballard, Fremont, or even areas slightly further out like Greenwood or White Center if you want lower rent. Public transportation is decent, especially if you live near a RapidRide line, but a car can be really useful for exploring the surrounding areas. Factor in about $2500-$3500/month for rent and utilities for a decent 1-bedroom, and be mindful of your spending habits. Eating out adds up fast in Seattle.
