Is $105k enough in Portland?

My wife and I are considering a move to Portland, OR, but I'm getting cold feet about the finances. We bring in a combined $105k per year before taxes. We have no kids, no student loans, and relatively low debt (car payment is $300/month). Is that enough to live comfortably, rent a decent place in a safe neighborhood, and still save a bit?

That salary is workable but 'comfortable' depends on your definition and spending habits. You can find a decent one-bedroom apartment in those neighborhoods for around $1800-$2200. Factor in utilities, groceries (Portland is expensive), transportation (a monthly transit pass is around $100), and your entertainment budget. With careful budgeting, you should be able to save a reasonable amount, but don't expect to live extravagantly.

That salary is doable but requires careful budgeting. Portland's rental market is competitive, so expect to spend a significant portion of your income on housing (easily $1800-$2500+ depending on location and size). Factor in utilities, transportation (car insurance, gas, or public transit), groceries, and healthcare. Discretionary spending will depend on how much you prioritize saving. Living further from the city center can reduce housing costs.
