Is $100k enough in Austin?

My wife and I are considering a move, but I'm unsure if my current salary will cut it. I bring home about $100k annually before taxes. We're pretty frugal and don't need to live in a super fancy area, but safety and good schools are non-negotiable since we're planning to start a family soon. Is owning a home realistic, or should we plan on renting for the foreseeable future? What kind of lifestyle can we expect?

Owning might be tight, especially with rising property taxes. Renting in a good school district like Round Rock or Cedar Park is probably the more realistic option initially. $100k supports a comfortable, but not extravagant, lifestyle. Factor in childcare costs; that can significantly impact your budget.

At $100k combined, Austin is tight but manageable if you're mindful. Focus on areas further from downtown; consider North Austin, or even suburbs like Round Rock or Pflugerville for more affordable rent. Cooking at home, limiting entertainment expenses, and utilizing Austin's free activities (parks, hiking trails) will be essential to saving anything significant.
