Dubai vs UK – which is better for expats?

I'm weighing Dubai and the UK for a potential expat assignment, primarily from a financial perspective, like how much I can save after tax. The job in Dubai is tax-free, but I've heard the cost of living can be high. The UK job has income tax, but maybe lower expenses overall? I'm in IT, mid-career. Anyone have insights on actual savings potential, factoring in rent, transport, and general living costs in both places? Any gotchas?

Dubai wins on tax-free income, meaning more disposable income despite a potentially higher cost of living in some areas. London has a more established tech scene and wider career opportunities long-term. Healthcare is generally better in the UK due to the NHS, although private healthcare in Dubai is excellent but expensive. Travel-wise, Dubai is a great hub for exploring Asia and Africa, while London provides easier access to Europe. Culture is a personal preference, but London is more westernized and diverse, while Dubai is more conservative and influenced by Islamic traditions. Ultimately, career goals, preferred lifestyle, and long-term financial planning should drive your choice.

Savings potential depends heavily on your specific lifestyle. Dubai's tax-free income is a huge advantage, but rent is a killer, especially in popular areas. Utilities can also be surprisingly expensive, mainly AC. The UK has income tax and National Insurance to consider, but council tax and other expenses are often predictable. Groceries are probably cheaper in the UK. Healthcare is free on the NHS, whereas you'll need private medical insurance in Dubai, usually covered by your employer. Realistically, a moderate lifestyle in Dubai could lead to higher savings if you're disciplined, but the UK offers more long-term stability and a potentially better quality of life. Also, don't forget to factor in visa costs. The UK is making things really hard these days...
Avatarhonestopinion: Visa costs and healthcare are things that often get overlooked in these comparisons, making a huge difference to your budget.
