Denver vs Austin tech salary?

I'm trying to figure out if the higher salaries in the Denver tech scene truly compensate for the increased cost of living compared to Austin. I'm a mid-level software engineer with about 5 years of experience, primarily focused on backend development (Java, Spring). I've seen postings in Denver offering around $140k-$160k, while similar roles in Austin seem to be in the $120k-$140k range. Is that extra $20k-$30k enough to offset the housing, transportation, and overall expenses in Denver, or am I better off staying put in Austin?

Austin's cost of living is generally lower, especially when it comes to housing. However, Denver's tech scene is booming, and that salary difference might give you more room for growth in the long run. Look closely at the tax implications in both states; Texas has no state income tax, which is a big plus. Crunch the numbers using a cost of living calculator that factors in your specific spending habits and lifestyle.

Austin's income tax situation (none) needs to be factored in, as it can offset some of Denver's potentially higher base salaries, especially when you get into higher compensation brackets. Benefits packages are also highly variable between companies in both cities, and should be carefully compared. Don't just look at the headline salary figures.
