California vs Nevada – which is cheaper?

My family and I are considering a move, and California and Nevada are our top choices, but cost is a major factor for us. Specifically, I'm wondering about the overall cost of living, including housing (renting or buying), taxes (income, property, sales), and everyday expenses like groceries and utilities. I'm also interested in how costs might vary between different cities or regions within each state. For example, is Reno cheaper than Las Vegas in Nevada, and how do those compare to Sacramento or San Diego in California? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Nevada generally has lower housing costs, especially if you look outside of the immediate Las Vegas area. Property taxes are also significantly lower in Nevada. California hits you hard with state income tax, which Nevada doesn't have. Day-to-day expenses might be slightly lower in some parts of Nevada too, but that's more location-dependent.

Nevada generally has lower income taxes since it doesn't have a state income tax. Property taxes can be lower depending on the specific location, but sales tax rates can be comparable. Housing is where you'll see the biggest difference; Nevada, outside of the Lake Tahoe area, tends to be significantly cheaper than most parts of California, especially coastal areas. Groceries and utilities might be marginally less expensive in Nevada, but the housing difference is the primary driver of overall cost savings.
