Best state for software engineers – Texas vs California?

Cost of living is my biggest concern, especially housing. I'm a mid-level developer with about five years of experience, and while California salaries are higher, I'm not sure if they offset the exorbitant housing costs, especially in the Bay Area or even LA. Texas seems more appealing from a purely financial standpoint – lower taxes, cheaper homes – but I'm wondering if the job market is as robust, and if the opportunities for career advancement are comparable. Is it worth sacrificing potential salary growth for a better quality of life (i.e., owning a home sooner) in Texas?

Texas wins on cost of living, particularly housing. However, consider the specific cities within Texas. Austin is becoming increasingly expensive, nearing California prices in some areas. Dallas and Houston are generally more affordable. For pure software engineering job volume, California still leads, offering a wider range of specialized roles and companies. Growth potential is also strong in California, though competitive. Factor in state income tax; California's is high. If your priority is rapid savings and homeownership, Texas is compelling. If you value career diversity and potentially higher (but taxed) earnings, California remains a contender.

California's higher salaries often offset the state income tax, particularly for senior engineers. While Texas has no income tax, the overall compensation packages (including equity and bonuses) in California tech hubs are generally more lucrative. Consider the specific companies you're targeting and compare total compensation, accounting for cost of living differences. Use online calculators to estimate after-tax income in both locations based on realistic salary expectations.
