Best city in Texas for software engineers?

I'm trying to figure out where the best place is for a software engineer to live in Texas, considering both salary and cost of living. I'm primarily a backend developer with 5+ years of experience, and I value access to a strong tech community. Schools are important for my family, and being close to outdoor activities is a plus. I'm not a fan of extreme heat, so that's a factor too.

Austin gets all the hype, but don't sleep on Dallas. The cost of living is noticeably lower, especially when it comes to housing, and there are still plenty of major tech companies and startups in the area. Plus, DFW airport makes travel a breeze. San Antonio might be cheaper, but the tech scene isn't as mature. Houston has a ton of jobs, but you mentioned not liking the heat, and Houston summers are brutal.

Austin is the obvious answer, but it's expensive. Dallas has a surprisingly strong tech scene that's growing fast, and the cost of living is more manageable. Houston is another option, but it's heavily focused on the energy sector, so software jobs might be more specialized. San Antonio is up-and-coming but still smaller, so your options will be fewer.
